Hanging on the Telephone

Snapshots of a muddled life captured through an iPhone lens

1.  Spring 2015, it's on!  2. Finally out on DVD

3.  My rad new handmade cushions  4.  Ticked these beauties off my wishlist

5 & 6. Recent thrifted purchases - 50p each

7.  Mmmmm!  8.  A sign of fun times

Really wish I had more to report folks but things are rather frantic on the hamster wheel of life at the moment.  I've been a busy eBay seller, I might even have opened an Etsy shop... more on that soon!  I've bought some new stuff in the Black Friday sales and I've been looking after my gorgeous but troubled 9 month old who is leaving drool covered teeth marks in everything he touches.  The weather in the UK has been a mix of non stop downpours with the occasional short lived flash of sunlight so it's been pretty hard to get out and about as much as I'd like.  So many places I want to visit and take photographs.  I had my hair cut and recoloured last week but I've still not managed to get any decent shots to show you.  By the time you see it I will no doubt be sporting a lovely regrowth.

Cemetery Gates

♫ Keats & Yeats are on your side ♫

How many mothers do you know who take their kids to the cemetery on a Saturday afternoon? Well, now you do.  Regular readers of my erstwhile blog will be well aware of my documented love of graveyards.  For a while now I have been itching to explore this place.  Anfield Cemetery.  So Saturday afternoon armed with my new DSLR I took myself and the fam off to practice my shots and absorb the atmosphere.   Situated a stones throw from where I grew up  in a very well known area of Liverpool.  Anfield Cemetery is a fine example of Victorian municipal architecture.  One of 3 cemeteries commissioned by the Corporation of Liverpool to service the growing need for burial ground which was squeezing the town centre.  The first burial took place here in 1863.  A few months ago I attended this cemetery for the funeral of a family friend which reignited my interest in it.  I couldn't believe that this huge space so full of history was right on my doorstep for so long and I never appreciated it.  I never hung around after dark drinking cider and reading poetry on the gravestones.  I put this down to spending most of my adolescence barely moving from my bedroom and feeling no connection whatsoever to my surroundings.

But time heals and today I saw my old territory through different eyes.  I enjoyed being in this unusual location where the sense of quietude and space is palpable despite being right in the heart of the inner city.  Particularly impressive, minus the inane and barely literate graffiti, are the cemetery gates.  Solid and imposing in sandstone and wrought iron.  Shame I could only capture their splendour in vignettes as it was a match day and there were cars parked right up to the outer entrance.

Portmeirion : Pastel Mini Kingdom

Half term holiday week brought about a visit to Portmeirion.   Portmeirion is a tourist village designed and built by Sir Clough William Ellis between 1925 and 1975.  Fashioned after the Italian village of Portofino, it has served as a film location for numerous productions over the years.  Most famously as the village in the 1960's cult TV series The Prisoner.

I was rather taken with the garish colours and the juxtaposition of this piece of the Italian Riviera amid the rugged and unpretentious surroundings of Porthmadog.  Needless to say it was perfect for exploring, and it had an ice cream parlour which is always an added bonus

Desideration : Bookish

Desideration : Bookish

I am always spotting pretty things that I am convinced I need and will change my life.  Budget restrictions obviously hamper the acquisition of everything I desire, acting as a convenient safeguard against my capricious nature.  Lately I've been all about literary accessories.  It started out with my desire for the Penguin Classic iPhone cover and sort of spiralled from there.  Along the way I found the perfect Nancy Drew T-shirt for Miss 7 and Le Petit Prince vest for Mast. L.  Otherwise, everything else is stuff I want.  I don't really know what I'd do with the Penguin postcards other than admire them.  They're too nice to actually use.  Maybe put them in a frame or something.  Same with the EAP print.  One can never have too much Poe in one's life as far as I'm concerned.

Find the River : Torrent Walk, Dollgellau

"There's lots of exploring to be done around here.  Go through the gate that nobody uses and see if you can find your way to the river".   That's what the owner of our holiday cottage said to Miss 7 as we arrived at Dollgeathau October half term.  So we did.  Well, first of all I did.  Having been up since the wee small hours with an inexplicably restless 7 month old, I took advantage of the solitude of early morning and snuck out on my adventures.  The sun was low in the sky and the air was fresh.  Passing through the gate I  followed the winding unkempt path through the forest, happening upon random blocks of limestone, fungi and long abandoned crumbling outbuildings along the way.  Then there was the river in all its glory.  Alongside it there seemed to be a scene from Arthurian legend.  Wood carvings, fallen branches and evidence of recent bonfires.  The best adventure playground I have ever seen.  I was happy to lose myself in that scene and enjoy nothing but the sound of the flowing waters.  More happy times were had at that location before the week was out.  This part of Wales was new to me and had acres and acres of forest that I just ached to explore.  I can't wait to return for more adventures.
